Eickholt Gallery :: Lisa Eickholt

Early in 2003, Lisa Eickholt opened The Eickholt Gallery. Through hard work and intuition, she discovered some of New York's most innovative and talented artists.
Lisa majored in Art History at The University of California, Santa Barbara. Her education placed an emphasis on modern art, especially expressionism, impressionism, surrealism and cubism. Lisa spent a year in Europe as an exchange student studying Spanish art and culture at The University of Seville in Spain. She additionally studied at The Sorbonne in Paris where she studied French and European art. While traveling, Lisa had the pleasure of viewing many of the world's most treasured art and artifacts.
As a dance minor in collage, Lisa danced in recreations of pieces by Martha Graham and Jose Limon. After graduation, she traveled to Japan where she became proficient in Japanese. Here, she continued to focus on dance in addition to studying various Japanese art forms including Ikebana, the art of Japanese flower arranging.  Lisa got her start in the world of fine art acquisition after being asked to seek out artwork for a private buyer in Japan who had great faith in her well developed aesthetic judgment.  On his behalf she located and purchased lithographs by Dali and Miro and thus got her first taste of gallery life.   Her experience at Butterfield and Butterfield in Los Angeles as a member of the art auction preview staff furthered her experience and exposure to art and eventually led her to opening her own gallery in 2003.

What are the characteristics of the Eickholt Gallery that make it unique?
I focus on obtaining art that falls under one or more of the following categories: Geometric Psycho-Kinetic Expressionism, Post-Expressionistic Naive Art, Subconscious Expressionism, Atmospheric Expressionism, and 3-Dimensional Conceptualism.  The gallery focuses on recruiting both established and emerging artists who have the potential to substantially contribute to a past artistic movement while being innovative and relevant for the future.

How does the evaluation process at The Eickholt Gallery work?
I choose art based on their continuation of certain periods in art history, such as, Surrealism, Cubism, Abstract Expressionism, Impressionism and Post Impressionism. These works of art must prove to be innovative in their outreach towards the future.

How do you assess the importance of the New York Art Market for the art market worldwide?
The New York Art scene is of great importance to the worldwide art market.  I think the current economic situation post 9/11 and the down turn in the stock market have had hugely negative affects on the art consumer market. I think, however, that the market will improve and that people will invest in art more in time. My opinion is that New York has an infusion of talent that I haven't seen anywhere else in the world. I meet amazingly talented and creative people on a daily basis.
